Description Created in 1949, the Department of Defense is charged with the awesome responsibility of coordinating the world’s largest and most technologically advanced fighting force. The Pentagon has been identified so strongly with the Department of Defense for more than five decades, that often the two terms are freely interchanged. The reverse displays the seal of the Department of Defense. Minted from solid bronze and given antique finish, this coin is accented with richly-colored enamels.
