Discovered in 1881 by a wandering cowpoke — whose hat shot off his head in a gust from the cave — the caves and park are a vintage slice of the old American West. Above ground, the park holds over 28,000 acres of prairie and forest land and is home to wildlife such as bison, elk, prairie dogs, and pronghorn antelope. The medallion’s obverse shows a subterranean tour of the famous caves with the date the park was established in 1903. The medallion’s reverse shows a park regular, the proud bison.
